G.I. Joe was first introduced back in the early 1960′s as an 11.5″ action figure doll for boys. Hasbro made the action figures and named them after a movie character from the movie “The Story of G. I. Joe” which was in theatres in the early 1960′s. The movie was a huge hit, and the action figures were as well. At that time, G. I. Joe was very unique because it had an amazing 21 moving parts. This was a very cutting edge design at that time.
In 1969, five years after being introduced to the market, G.I. Joe went from being the name of one specific action figure, to the name of an entire line of action figures for boys. Due to its popularity, Hasbro expanded the G. I. Joe line and even included the Canadian Mountie set.
Over the years, G.I. Joe has undergone many changes in uniform, design, vehicles, missions…even hair styles! G.I. Joe has fought different adversaries, different soldiers, and for different causes, but the one thing that has stayed the same across the decades is that boys continue to love G. I. Joe!
Hasbro has tried to stay true to the original G.I. Joe character, while keeping him updated to suit the ages. In 1982 G.I. Joe entered into a licensing partnership with Marvel Comics, at which time G.I. Joe lovers could enjoy even more products that featured their favorite character such as: uniforms, weapons, vehicles and comic books.
